Press Release — Nepal Tourism Year Event in Paris
To sensitize French and foreigners alike in France about Nepal Tourism Year 2011, the Embassy of Nepal in Paris hosted a function yesterday evening at the UNESCO Hall in Paris.
The program was inaugurated by His Excellency Mr. Mohan Krishna Shrestha, Ambassador of Nepal to France andHis Excellency Senator Mr. Jean-Pierre Kucheida, President of France-Nepal Amity Group in the National Assembly lighting the holy Sukunda oil lamp.
Present on the occasion were high ranking representatives from French Foreign Ministry, Ambassadors of USA, China, Japan, Laos, Malta and El Salvador to UNESCO, Professors, former French Ambassadors to Nepal, journalists, medias, tour operators, Chairmen of Nepalese societies in France, Nepalese students, long-term Nepali residents, French NGO's active in Nepal and many others from different walks of life. Embassy family was also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Shrestha informed that the Government of Nepal had decided to celebrate this year 2011 as Nepal Tourism Year with an objective of welcoming 1
million international tourists in the country.
Ambassador Shrestha also gave some descriptions about Nepal saying — Nepal is an ancient country with 885 kilometers of alluring high Himalayas as a roof top of the world stretching from west to east. He further said that besides world's highest peak Mt.Everest at 8,.848 meters, there are 7 other peaks above 8 thousand meters, 90 peaks over 7 thousand meters and 250 peaks over 6 thousand meters and the most prominent geographical feature in the country is that the lowest point lies merely 70 meters above sea level while highest point lies at 8,848 meters within a radius of 150 kilometers.
Going further on the introduction of Nepal, Ambassador Shrestha said that Nepal is a reservoir of natural beauties, rich flora and fauna, exotic and adventurous wildlife. Many consider Nepal as a living museum of religious temples, monuments, age-old traditions, cultural festivals, arts andartefacts as well as palaces of traditional architecture. Nepalese master craftsmen, for centuries, have produced excellent sculptures in wood, metals and stones and such masterpieces can be seen in Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur cities as well as in other parts of the country.
Touching on another aspect, Ambassador Shrestha mentioned that Shakyamuni Lord Buddha, the Apostle of Peace, was born in Lumbini, in southern part of Nepal in 623 B.C. and his teachings of love, peace and tolerance is becoming increasingly popular among the people in the world. Similarly. only living Goddes in the world Kumari resides in Basantapur area in Kathmandu city blessing the people.
Ambassador Shrestha elaborated on the modem tourism activities available in the country like bungee jumping, canoeing, eco-tourism, jungle safari, hunting in the preserved area, mountain flight, paragliding, ride in ultra-light aircraft, rafting and trekking.
He also informed that Nepal has 10 World Heritage Sites listed by UNESCO and out of those, 7 alone are in Kathmandu valley.
Touching on the social aspects, he said that there are 103 ethnic groups of people and they speak 92 spoken languages. Nepalese people live in peace and harmony following their own traditional cultures and faiths. Unity in diversity is an excellent hallmark of the Nepalese people. Smiling nature of the people coupled with warm hospitality is well known all over the world.
On the same occasion, Senator Kucheida expressed his utmost happiness to attend the inaugural ceremony and wished Nepal Tourism Year a grand success. He further said that he holds profound affection towards Nepal and Nepalese people and always wish for their well-being. He expressed the happiness that a new Ambassador from Nepal in France has taken his post and he looked forward to work closely to further strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two
countries.
Senator Kucheida also mentioned that he and Amity group has been remarking the political changes taking place in Nepal since last few years and wished that the on-going peace process will come to a fruitful conclusion.
Senator Kucheida also said that he has not visited Nepal so far. So, he would make program to visit Nepal alongwith his friends in the near future.
A list of Special Features of Nepal were presented to the guests at the program. Similarly, new web-site of the Embassy was inaugurated by Ambassador Shrestha. This web-site will be available in English, French and Spanish languages soon.
A documentary made by Nepal Tourism Board " Naturally Beautiful Nepal — Once is not Enough" was screened. Guests with provided with gifts of CD roms on Nepal and other brochures in French language.
A Nepal food dinner was served to nearly 100 French, foreigners and Nepali guests at the end. Program was conducted by DCM/Minister counselor Mr. Jiban Prakash Shrestha.

The Embassy of Nepal in Paris requests all interested international businessmen to participate in the Nepal International Trade Fair (NITF 2012) to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal on 5-9 April 2012, to be organized by the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce & Supplies, Government of Nepal. The Conference aims to give a global platform to the Nepalese SMEs and create new opportunities for them.
