In an effort to broaden opportunities for high level studies for Nepali students in France, the Embassy of Nepal in Paris organized an interaction program last Friday, 28 October 2011.
Present on the occasion were famous US Professor, Nobel Laureate and Scientist George Smoot, associated with Paris Centre for Cosmological Physics and French Astronomers and Professors of Paris Observatory Danial Rouan, Didier Pelat, Jacque Le-borlot, James Rich, Andrea Ciardi. And also Ms. Rakhee Patel, International Relations Officer of the University of Pierre Marie Curie was present on the occasion.
From Nepali side, Education Secretary and Leader of the Nepalese delegation to the 36th General Conference of UNESCO, Law and Justice Secretary Mr. Raju Man Singh Malla, Mr.Rajib Gautam, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Khum Raj Punjali, Director General of the Department of Money Laundering Investigation and Mr. Dharma Raj Sapkota, Legal officer of the Nepal Rastra Bank, who were in Paris in connection with official works and some Nepali students were also.
Nepali Ambassador to France His Excellency Mr. Mohan Krishna Shrestha welcoming the professors and guests highlighted about the interesting facts about the Tihar festival. Ambassador Shrestha said that Nepali students are bright and subject to availability of opportunities for higher studies in France, they can do very well in their studies. He, therefore, requested the professors to think over if they can do something for providing scholarships to Nepali students. Ambassador Shrestha further said that there is a big political, social and economic changes going on Nepal in the process of building a New Nepal, therefore, the role and responsibility of students need not further elaboration as students are the pillar of socio-economic development in any country. Informing that this year is the celebrated Nepal Tourism Year, he invited professors to visit Nepal at a convenient time.
Ph.D student Mr. Uddab Chaulagain presented the brief introduction of the distinguished professors.
Education Secretary Mr. Shankar Prasad Pandey said that there has been an incredible development in the education sector in Nepal and now, both government and private sectors are engaged in accelerating the process of educational development in the country. He further said that the Government had established a separate Ministry of Science and Technology to undertake actions for the development of the science and technology sector in the country.
Professor Smoot, while recalling his earlier two visits to Nepal said that Nepal is a naturally beautiful country and he has vivid memories of his visits. He said that for the development of any country, first, infrastructures, electricity, transport and communication sectors must be developed. He showed eagerness to visit Nepal again at a convenient time. He promised to extend possible help to the Nepali students. Renowned Professor Smoot was awarded Nobel Prize for Physics in 2006 and many other prizes in this field.
French Astronomy Professor Rouan said that Nepal is a very beautiful country with most friendly people and he look forward to visit the country soon. He also expressed his happiness for getting chance to be associated with Nepali students who have shown good progress in the studies.
Another speaker Professor James Rich said that he had visited Nepal about 35 years ago and he was pleased to note that Nepal is going though a sea change in the fields of politics and socio-economic development. Recalling his visit, he said Nepal is, indeed, a very beautiful and important country of the world in terms natural beauties and cultural assets. So, Nepal must safeguard this image in coming days to attract more tourists in the country.
A CD Rom made by Nepal Tourism Board on “ Naturally Beautiful Nepal – Once is not Enough” was screened and at the end of the program, Nepali dinner was served to the delight of the distinguished guests.

The Embassy of Nepal in Paris requests all interested international businessmen to participate in the Nepal International Trade Fair (NITF 2012) to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal on 5-9 April 2012, to be organized by the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce & Supplies, Government of Nepal. The Conference aims to give a global platform to the Nepalese SMEs and create new opportunities for them.
